In words and song, Beaty portrays 40 different characters including a homeless man, a scientist, a Republican business exec, a street vendor, an 11-year old boy from the projects, and a slam poet named Rodney; all of them respond to the bizarre phenomenon in unique, comical, and unexpected ways. Their responses on this surreal happening are testimonies on identity and personal freedom. Rodney’s slam poetry is interwoven throughout the show.

Emergency! Explores the themes of identity, freedom, and racial justice. Daniel Beaty’s Obie Award winning one-man performance depicts what happens when a slave ship appears in front of the Statue of Liberty, sending New York into a whirlwind of activity, confusion, and emotion.
